Iran in 2009 – New Course or Old Paradigms?
17 September 2009, London
Legatum Institute
In September 2009, the Legatum Institute and the Henry Jackson Society hosted a joint Anglo-American conference on Iran. The conference brought together leading policy analysts, public policy practitioners and human rights activists to examine the make-up of the Islamic Republic - the religious, ideological and political aspects that took control of Iran 30 years ago and remain in control through metamorphosis ever since, even after recent democratic convulsions. Comprehending Iran’s governance and internal dynamics are prerequisites to understanding its policies today and, in turn, to forming policies towards it. With a backdrop of unresolved nuclear proliferation issues to consider, the conference convened on a platform of transatlantic dialogue and discussed Iran’s ambitions, both regionally and globally, and exchanged ideas on international policy options on how to deal with it at this critical time.
