Advocacy & Advisory
Overview
Legatum Global Development seeks to promote the economic prosperity and personal fulfilment of people in all nations, without discrimination and without allegiance to any political agenda or party. This entails the development of environments which enable individuals to find and productively fulfil their personal vocation. The free flow of capital within a just and equitable legal system, respect for property rights, limited barriers to trade and control over corruption are considered to be fundamental prerequisites for liberating human potential.
Advocacy
We have developed the Legatum Prosperity Index to better understand the key drivers and restrainers of national prosperity. It is a global study covering more than 50 countries based on the analyses of 40 years worth of economic data and it introduces a new measure of national prosperity combining the latest life satisfaction measures with material wealth indicators. The Legatum Prosperity Index is intended to be a practical tool for anyone interested in the building blocks that comprise national prosperity. Click here to browse the findings and explore the data.
We seek creative, principles-based ways to promote sustainable global prosperity through the efficient allocation of resources.
In addition to our proprietary advocacy and research work, we partner with others who are advancing the cause of prosperity. We currently support:
- Global Integrity. Over the last 2 years, we have supported the expansion of the Global Integrity Report, empirically-researched evaluations of countries' national integrity. The number of countries that Global Integrity now monitors has doubled since our initial involvement with the organisation. The country reports are being used by policymakers around the world to promote anti-corruption and good governance reforms.
- Transparency International. For the last three years we have supported Transparency International in its efforts to raise awareness and advocate anti-corruption and good governance reforms throughout the world. In 2006 we funded an Asia-focused national integrity study that is scheduled for publication in December.
- Liberal Democratic Studies Centre. We are working closely with the Centre for Liberal-Democratic Studies, "CLDS", a free market think tank located in Belgrade, on a nine month project to draft and publish a monograph entitled, 'From Poverty to Prosperity: Free Market Based Solutions'. The book will be a rigorous study on the public policy drivers and restrainers of national prosperity.
- The Ludwig Von Mises Institute. We have made a small grant to LMVI that will be used to publish currently out-of-print books by free-market and classical liberal thinkers such as Friedrich von Hayek, Murray Rothbard and Milton Friedman.
Advisory
Legatum Global Development is currently working with the government of a central African country to formulate an effective foreign direct investment policy. Our advisory engagement is focused on the development of a policy environment that will make the country an attractive destination for foreign direct investment.
