Legatum Institute launches its fifth United States Prosperity Index

The United States Prosperity Index (USPI) offers a set of unique and holistic insights into what is driving and constraining prosperity across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and 1,502 counties across 18 selected states. It is built on 231 distinct measures from over 90 diverse sources from across the U.S. grouped under 49 themes. It highlights which challenges are shared across the United States, but also pinpoints where problems are local, shaped by a wide variety of societal and economic issues.

In particular, the 2023 Index finds that:

  • Long-term U.S. prosperity has risen in all states apart from Alaska, with Florida the most improved.
  • The U.S. economy strengthened due to an improving business environment, increased employment and greater productivity; though rising interest rates may undermine further economic growth.
  • Despite a strengthening economy, U.S. prosperity falters in 2023, as the impact of the pandemic is more fully realised.
  • U.S. prosperity is being further curtailed, as ‘preventable’ deaths rise. Moreover, a decline in American social cohesion impedes a common resolve to seek solutions.

The Index has been used by a range of state and locally based organisations to help drive change across the country, from informing the Community Needs Assessments of rural hospitals in Montana to reinforcing arguments for legislative changes that can reduce high healthcare costs in Mississippi. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those that have supported the Index over the past five years, particularly the Helmsley Charitable Trust, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
