The Africa Prize is a program that seeks to recognise and reward the best of small business in emerging markets; in any given economy, small businesses are the largest employers, and in emerging markets particularly, they represent the best hope for a nation to achieve economic growth and social stability through the creation of worthwhile, sustainable employment.
In 2007, more than 450 applicants from Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda were rigorously judged according to four criteria – effective business performance, leadership, commitment to employees and long-term sustainability – and eleven finalists selected to appear before a panel of expert judges. The Legatum Grand Prize Winner was awarded US $100,000 towards business development and training; five other winners were each rewarded with US $50,000.
